Donating a car to "Paritätische Sozialdienste"
More effective support for deserving poor

On December 20 a Citroen C1 was handed over to "Paritätische Sozialdienste" by our Vice President Barbara Rominger-Hess. This small car will be used for various social tasks of the voluntary helpers. More and more people need help in many areas of their daily life. Volunteers support older people as well as young families morally and practically. The car will be a big help with all these jobs.

We hope that the members of "Paritätische Sozialdienste" can contribute a lot of help with this car in many areas.

So, always save drivings!

14.12.2011 Visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg
What an eventful day!

51 Ladies of the International Women's Club had accepted an invitation of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation for a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The constitution and workings of the European Council as well as the impressive architecture of the parliament were illuminated during a tour, followed by a visit to the plenary session. Afterwards there was a lively discussion with the Social Democrat Euro MP Ms Evelyne Gebhardt which left all participants extremely satisfied. A press notice of the Parliament mentioned the visit of the International Ladies, and this was swiftly followed by an invitation for a further visit in 2012.

Before the visit to the Parliament the Ladies had ample time to discover the delightful Strasbourg Christmas Market, the Nativity Scene at the Cathedral, and enjoyed precious shopping time in the festive lanes. We departed in horrid weather but arrived in sunny France. No wonder, the Ladies got the weather they deserved!

22.09.2011 Visit to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe
French Contemporary Art: Lumière Noire

The mystical interaction of light and black has been a phenomenon of French art since the 19th century. The exhibition "light-containing Black" links paintings, sculptures, drawings and video art by 12 young French artists.

Frau Dr. Rosebrock guided the participants of the Arts Group through the beautifully designed exhibition at the Orangery.

20.09.2011 Start into the Fall
Our Club's traditional Fall Tea

The Fall / Winter season was opened with the traditional Fall Tea of the International Women's Club. There was much to talk about after the long summer break over delicious home-baked cakes and pies. Both newly-arrived American students as well as new guest members were introduced and two returning German students talked about their year in the USA. (For more information visit "Student Exchange")

Highlight of the afternoon was a film by Peter Sindelar about the last Pfennigbasar which vividly expressed how hundreds of helpers manage to stock orderly stalls from 70 tons of donated goods, satisfying thousands of customers, and then clearing away at lightning speed. The club ladies were themselves surprised.

A great preparation for the new Pfennigbasar in January 2012!

17.06.2011 Handover of second hand car to Women's Shelter Karlsruhe
Joy over a nice practical car

The keys to a second hand Renault Kangoo were handed over to the ladies running the Karlsruhe women's refuge shelter on Friday, 17 June 2011. Until then they had to drive huge distances in their private cars and are now very happy to own a versatile vehicle with a large trunk, which was donated from the proceeds of the 44th Pfennigbasar.

Festive Funds Donation on May 10 2011
This year again a great event

The festively decorated Karlsburg in Durlach was full to bursting, even the balconies had been opened. The ladies of the IWC were donating 161,820 Euros to the Student Exchange and Youth Program of the Federation of German-American Clubs, as well as to 41 local charitable organizations.

Patron of the Pfennigbasar, Karlsruhe Lord Mayor Heinz Fenrich congratulated on behalf of the town; President Gary Bautell spoke for the Federation of German-American Clubs, and Mrs. Sinner thanked on behalf of the charitable organizations.

President Heidi Talbott pointed out that the Guiness Book of Records should be notified of this terrific record Pfennigbasar result. A further 30,000 Euros will be donated at Christmastime, and we feel that the hard work and dedication of all Pfennigbasar helpers cannot be praised highly enough.

The musical accompaniment of the evening was provided by guitar duo Yuliya Lonskaya and Dimitri Illarionov, whose technically brilliant and outstandingly entertaining musical program left us feeling elated and very happy. Unfortunately, the evening ended far too quickly!

Our 44th Pfennigbasar in January 2011
The last year result could be beaten!

The 44th Pfennigbasar was officially opened on 27 January 2011 under the patronage of Lord Mayor Fenrich by Karlsruhe's First Mayor Mergen. Federation President Gary Bautell motivated and praised our efforts and then the multitude of visitors stormed the Schwarzwald hall.

What more can one say about this record bazaar? Record amounts of donated goods collected, sorted - altogether hard work - and sold in two and a half days for a record amount of about 192,000 Euros?

The Pfennigbasar of the International Women's Club Karlsruhe is simply the biggest and most succsessful charity bazaar in the whole of Germany! Famous German artists will create a light installation respectively a book sculpture from items which they purchased during the bazaar. More details, together with pictures, during the creation process.

We are all proud of our achievement and and a big thank-you goes to all helpers as well as our sponsors!

07.12.2010 Christmas Tea at Karlsburg in Durlach
Reminiscence of American Roots

The Christmas Tea on December 7 at the Karlsburg in Durlach was a wonderful finish to a busy club year. Together with honorary guest, Federation President Gary Bautell and the presidents of the South-West clubs we celebrated an American Christmas. Cheery American Christmas songs were presented by the children's choir of the Helmholtz secondary school, and we were all able to join in the singing thanks to Sherry Altehenger-Smith's festive song sheets. She and Maureen Buhr pictured to us the manifold traditions of American Christmas, as well as their experiences of a much quieter German Christmas.

Our American students, Sam and Karl, also described their Christmas at Home and then became our Santas when they distributed basketfuls of candy canes, donated by honorary member Gie Kyrios, to everyone in the hall.

High point was the final funds donation of the year to local charitable organizations, swelling the total for 2010 to 163,000 Euros. No need to tell you, dear reader, how terrific this sum is! And the next Pfennigbasar is just around the corner - same procedure as every year!

25.11.2010 Thanksgiving
Traditional Turkey Dinner

On Thanksgiving Day the cooking team assembled under the tried and tested organisation of Susanne Price at the gleaming kitchen of the Savings Bank Karlsruhe to prepare two giant turkeys @ 35 pounds each with rice stuffing, five different vegetables, gravy as well as cranberry relish. This year's phenomenal dessert was an apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. Chef Buchmann ably guided the team and the Thanksgiving Dinner was a huge success.

Our American students Karl and Sam told us of their home customs on Thanksgiving and then we toasted friends and family near and far.

Animated conversation let the evening pass quickly and we went home full and happy, accompanied by the first snow of the coming winter.

09. - 11.10.2009 German-America-Day in Berlin
Ceremonial Act in the Bundespresseamt

The German-American-Day 2009 took place in Berlin from 9th to 11th of October. During the festivities in the Bundespresseamt, Angela Merkel was awarded with the Lucius-D.-Clay Medal, the highest award of the FGAC. Due to political appointments the German Chancellor unfortunately could not receive the award in person. Philipp D. Murphy, the now American Ambassador, was the main speaker of the celebration.

In the course of the afternoon the students returning from their year in the USA were honoured and the American exchange students were welcomed. The IWC Karlsruhe was represented by members of the board, of the student exchange program and some youths from Karlsruhe who had participated in the trip to the USA in August 2009.

31.07. - 15.08.2009 Youth travel of the VDAC to USA
36 youths gained unforgetable impressions

A total of 36 youths, eight of which come from the Karlsruhe Club, took part in a trip to the USA, organised by the VDAC. Aim of this trip was to get to know the country and to facilitate meetings and exchange with young Americans aged 14 to 17. These very successful meetings took place in New York and Oakland/Maryland.

The trip was partially funded by the German Ministry of Youth and Family Affairs. Further funding was made available through donations by the united VDAC Clubs. In return, some 16 American youths will partake in an exchange to Germany between September 3. and 8.

Please see our Homepage ("student exchange") for further details.
