04.05.2010 Funds Presentation
It's contagious…

Phantastic atmosphere - happiness and pride over another great success brought so many people to the Karlsburg in Durlach that there were not enough chairs. It was time to celebrate what we achieved in January. Essentials for a good party were:

Guests: Club members, helpers and recipients of donations from various charities.
A speech: Celebratory words of praise and encouragement from our president who once again made clear to us what a magnificent achievement we celebrated and thus motivated us for more of the same and possibly even better in future.
Presents: The ceremonious presentation of our donations to the selected charity organizations.
Music: The music that young and gifted Jaleh Perego creates with her instrument is nothing less than brilliant. Marc Seiffge's sensitive accompaniment complements Jaleh's music wonderfully.
Food and Drink: As they say, food and drink hold body and soul together and gave our guests the opportunity to mingle. Yes, the Pfennigbasar is great, our spirit contagious and the 131.000 EUR which could be distributed are a huge amount of money and indispensible to many of the organizations.

Well done, ladies!

And in this spirit another two pictures of our contagious Pfennigbasar:

Our 43rd Pfennigbasar in January 2010
Another resounding success!!!

The Pfennigbasar 2010 which took place from 28 to 30 January at the Schwarzwaldhalle in Karlsruhe raised a record sum of around 155,000 Euros all of which will be donated! Our hard work during the preceding weeks was really worth it and there was a great atmosphere during this largest Charity Bazaar in Germany. The ladies of the IWC Karlsruhe are proud of their success.

Our great thanks go to all guest helpers who helped us realize this fantastic achievement. We are able, therefore, to again support many charitable organizations within the region as well as the Student Exchange Program and the Youth Program of the Federation.

08.12.2009 Christmas Tea in Durlach
Pre-Christmas celebrations at Karlsburg castle

As in previous years, around 150 club members came together in the grand hall of Karlsburg castle for some pre-christmas celebrations. As part of this event, the club officially donated an additional 25,000 Euros to Karlsruhe based charities supporting them in their work with children. The funds were made available from this year's "Pfennigbasar" proceeds.

International members of the club recited poems and stories in their respective languages, supported by the student choir from the Karlsruhe "Helmholtz Gymnasium" high-school, which added to the very festive atmosphere.

09. - 11.10.2009 German-America-Day in Berlin
Ceremonial Act in the Bundespresseamt

The German-American-Day 2009 took place in Berlin from 9th to 11th of October. During the festivities in the Bundespresseamt, Angela Merkel was awarded with the Lucius-D.-Clay Medal, the highest award of the FGAC. Due to political appointments the German Chancellor unfortunately could not receive the award in person. Philipp D. Murphy, the now American Ambassador, was the main speaker of the celebration.

In the course of the afternoon the students returning from their year in the USA were honoured and the American exchange students were welcomed. The IWC Karlsruhe was represented by members of the board, of the student exchange program and some youths from Karlsruhe who had participated in the trip to the USA in August 2009.

24.09.2009 Autumn Tea
Start into the season 2009/2010

On 24th September 2009, the opening of the saison with the tradional Autum Tea Afternoon was held like every year in Gastdozentenhaus of the University of Karlsruhe. Like every year, everybody enjoyed coffee, tea and cakes accompanied by good conversations after the long summer break.

The highlight of the afternoon was the concert of Xiayi Jiang, piano and Rabea Michler, recorder. Both are students at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. They performed pieces for piano and recorder by Bach, Swann and Vivaldi.

Apart from the musical entertainment Luisa Ewert, Mirjam Hoffmann and Lukas Bäuerle gave humorous impressions of their experience on our trip to USA in August 2009. During the trip from Boston via New York to Washington the young German travellers met on several occasions with American youths to talk and get together.

36 youths gained unforgetable impressions

A total of 36 youths, eight of which come from the Karlsruhe Club, took part in a trip to the USA, organised by the VDAC. Aim of this trip was to get to know the country and to facilitate meetings and exchange with young Americans aged 14 to 17. These very successful meetings took place in New York and Oakland/Maryland.

The trip was partially funded by the German Ministry of Youth and Family Affairs. Further funding was made available through donations by the united VDAC Clubs. In return, some 16 American youths will partake in an exchange to Germany between September 3. and 8.

Club trip to Poland from 26 April to 3 May 2009
- Masuria, Ermland, Gdansk -

Our member Margarete Koronczi had organized the tour which led us through beautiful and historic areas in Poland; from Warsaw through the Masurian Lakes Region to the Baltic Sea and then back to Warsaw via Gdansk. We were delighted by highlights off the beaten track and re-acquainted with historical and political facts from the past 1000 years. Neither did we miss out on literary guidance and gained renewed insight into the works by Marion Countess of Dönhoff, Siegfried Lenz and Ernst Wiechert.

After careful consideration by the Welfare Committee the IWC Karlsruhe allowed the application to finance a horse to use for therapy. The visitors received an impressive performance of the horse in action.
