Pfennig-Basar

The “PFENNIG-BASAR” was founded in 1968 by Gie Kyrios and Maria Becker in order to raise funds for the Student and Youth Exchange Program of the Federation of German-American Clubs and for charity purposes in the Karlsruhe region. Subsequent chairpersons of the "PFENNIG-BASAR" Maximiliane Riedel, Ursula Schneider, Margaret Großkinsky, Fränze Kleiner, Ursula Liesegang, Brigitte Hötzl und Marion Wenzel succeeded in continuously developing and enlarging the bazaar to its present size of over 2.575 m² in the centrally located Schwarzwaldhalle. Within the cultural life of the region the bazaar has achieved cult status.

From the beginning the patronage of the bazaar was held by the acting Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe, presently Lord Mayor Heinz Fenrich.

While at the start in 1968 it was the members of the club only who worked for the bazaar, now 200 club members and the same number of guest helpers donate volunteer time each year in January being supported by young men on community duty service and by members of Karlsruhe welfare organizations.
The gross income from the bazaar in 1968 was 8 880 German Marks.
In 2010 the “PFENNIG-BASAR” achieved a net result of 155 000 € to be spent for the Student and Youth Exchange Program and for welfare causes in the city of Karlsruhe.

Within the 43 years of its existence the "PFENNIG-BASAR" could distribute the significant sum of about 2 800 000 €.

The 44th "PFENNIG-BASAR" days will be published here by time.
