02.12.08 Christmas Tea at Durlach
An atmospheric Pre-Christmas afternoon in the Karlsburg


This year Christmas Tea as usual took place in the Karlsburg at Durlach. The motto was "German Christmas". About 150 club members enjoyed this candlelight afternoon full of atmosphere in the wonderful decorated festival room.

In the course of the event once again donations out of the proceeds of the Pfennigbasar were given to social institutions from Karlsruhe, this time in the amount of € 22,000. 

Furthermore Dr. Heide Geiter, Renate Hohn, Regine Lichtenthaler and Dr. Elisabeth Wittig were honoured for their long lasting engagement within the committee for student exchange.

The choir of Helmholtz Highschool's lower classes gave the musical frame to the Christmas Tea.

14.10.08 Visit to the castle of Stutensee
Impressive performance of the therapy horse

Members of IWC Welfare Committee and of IWC Board visited the castle of Stutensee, an institution of the child and youth welfare service, on 14. October 2008. A wide range of welfare is offered like taking care of young people in open groups or like special help to avoid imprisonment.

 After careful consideration by the Welfare Committee the IWC Karlsruhe allowed the application to finance a horse to use for therapy. The visitors received an impressive performance of the horse in action.

05.10.08 German American Day in Erfurt
Celebratory event in the historic town hall

The German American Day 2008 took place under the patronage of Thuringa's Prime Minister, Dieter Althaus, and of USA ambassador to Germany, William A Timken jr. Karsten Voigt, the Coordinator for German American cooperation of the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, was awarded the Lucius D. Clay Medal.

The students of Karlsruhe who finished a one year stay in the USA, and all other exchange students were handed out certificates by the FDAC in the historic town hall of Erfurt. And the American students who are currently in Germany were welcomed.

Members of the Board and of the Student Exchange Program and the Regional Chairperson represented the IWC Karlsruhe at this ceremony.

16.09.08 Autumn Tea
Successful start into the new season

The IWC-Karlsruhe started into the new season with the traditional Autumn Tea in Gastdozentenhaus Uni Karlsruhe on 16th September 2008. 70 Ladies had signed up for this first meeting after the long summer break. And so there were a lot of things to talk about along with coffee, tea and cake. The piano playing of 18 year old Ala Shishkova, student at Musikhochschule Karlsruhe, was the highlight of this event. She executed compositions of Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy. It was a lasting experience.

18.07.08 Schroff Scholarship
Sponsor supports Student Exchange Program of International Women’s Club Karlsruhe

At a Farewell Party for two American exchange students on July 18 at the residence of club member and member of the Student Exchange Committee Dr. Elisabeth Wittig, the President of the Schroff Foundation and Honorary Senator of Karlsruhe University, Ingrid Schroff, awarded Schroff Scholarship Certificates to exchange students Beverly Borgman and Heather Lambert. The scholarship consists of 5000,- € for each student.

Beverly studied Art History at the University of Karlsruhe and Heather studied German, History and Sociology at the Pädagogische Hochschule.

For many years the Schroff Foundation has been supporting the Student Exchange Program of the Federation of German-American Clubs by donating the sum of 10 000,- € each year for two scholarships given to the American Federation students in Karlsruhe.

Both, the Schroff Foundation and the International Women’s Club Karlsruhe take pride in helping young students to develop tolerance and understanding through the experience of studying abroad.

06.05.08 Rich Harvest Distributed
Women’s Club donated proceeds of the "PFENNIG-BASAR" 2008

Proceeds from the 41st "PFENNIG-BASAR" totaling 109 000 Euros were distributed by the International Women’s Club Karlsruhe during a ceremony at the Karlsburg in Durlach. Donations went to the Federation of German-American Clubs for their Student Exchange Program, youth work within the Federation and the IWC Karlsruhe as well as to 33 charitable organizations in Karlsruhe.
