Pfennigbasar

The "PFENNIGBASAR" was founded in 1968 by Gie Kyrios and Maria Becker in order to raise funds for the Student and Youth Exchange Program of the Federation of German-American Clubs and for charities in the Karlsruhe region. Subsequent chairpersons of the "PFENNIGBASAR" Maximiliane Riedel, Ursula Schneider, Margaret Großkinsky, Fränze Kleiner, Ursula Liesegang, Brigitte Hötzl, Marion Wenzel, Barbara Rominger-Hess and Dr. Birgit Maczek succeeded in continuously developing and enlarging the bazaar to its present size of over 2.575 m² in the centrally located Schwarzwaldhalle. The bazaar has achieved cult status in and around Karlsruhe.

From the outset the patron of the bazaar has always been the Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe, presently Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup.

Whilst at the start in 1968 the bazaar was only staffed by club members, there are now around 600 helpers comprising club members, guest helpers and other volunteers of various Karlsruhe charities.

The gross income from the bazaar in 1968 was 8 880 German Marks.

In 2017 the "PFENNIGBASAR" achieved a net income of 180 000 € all of which will be donated to the Student and Youth Exchange Program and to various charitable causes in and around Karlsruhe.

We are very proud to say that in the 50 years of its existence the Pfennigbasar has donated the magnificent sum of about 4,2 Million €.
